Antique Qing Chinese Sword Oxtail Dao Saber (Sanmai)
Authentic Antique Chinese Qing Dynasty Oxtail Saber (Nuiweidao) Blade 30 3/4 (78 cm), Overall 37 1/2 (95 cm) The heavy blade with an inserted hardened edge (qiangang) with an accelerating curve and up sweeping tip, with one wide central fuller bounded by two narrow fullers, with the characters M dào chéng gng , (gain an immediate victory), and Dé shèng , (win a victory), engraved at the forte. And with five bamboo shaped nodes along the spine of the blade also at the forte Mounted with stout, solid in fittings. Elm wood grip was likely grip wrapped at earlier its life. Overall very clean in very good condition. Iron guard is loose as is common for dao of this age. Nuiweidao (Oxtail Sabers) were civilian weapons and as such never produced according to a pattern. As such, they can vary considerably in weight, curvature and balance. This fine example is exceptionally well balanced and would make an excellent training sword for any serious practitioner. The solid in fittings lend it an honest feeling of a sword forged for a man who intended to put it to use. The engravings at the forte hint at this saber having been carried by a Boxer during the Boxer Rebellion, looking for a victory over the foreign forces and influences in China at the time.
