C1850 Chinese Very Fine Canton Enamel Incense Burner. A beautiful, but very unusual, very intricately enamel painted mid-19th century Chinese Cantonese Incense Burner base.
The piece appears to have been made in two parts by different artists and probably with age gap between them. The base is very delicately decorated with minute flowers, foliage and arabesques in white, blue, pink, yellow and green, applied onto gilded bronze. The inside is more plainly decorated and there is a central circle, with 4 small holes and 3 cutouts. This would have contained the burner.Because the burner is no longer present, it appears that a lid for the stand was commissioned and this has been decorated very finely, but with a different theme and colour palette to the base. The blue is stronger and the motifs are Buddhist, with the central flower, the parasol, the Dharma wheel and the twin fish. The underside has been enameled in turquoise , which doesn't appear on the rest of the piece. The enamel plate has a bronze lid surround. However, given this disparity, the combination works extremely well and it is truly a work of art. Size: 23 x 20 x 9.5 cm (9 x 8 x 3 3/4 inches) Weight: 1160 g. Have a look at our other items.
