Chinese Opium Wedding Bed Intricately Carved. East Coast Deliveries usually run more often. This is a very nice Chinese wedding bed.
Although some of the components may be old, most are either heavily restored or newer pieces made in the style of the wedding beds from the Qing Dynasty. This piece still has the overall appearance of the antique pieces. The base of the bed has a red front with 3 raised panels with dark framing to accentuate the panels. The platform surface is made up of a series of slats. We are including a new foam mattress with the bed (see dimensions below).Chinese Wedding Opium Bed Details. The front frame consists of 2 corner posts that have fancy carved pieces of wood and a header piece that matches the style of the corner posts. The center of the header and the middle of the corner posts each have a pierced carved section. There is also a nice relief carved panel on the bottom inside corners.
There is a top rail over the header that overhangs each end to give the front a finished detail. The slots in the front of the corners are where an enclosed front section with a lower platform would be attached. That section has a much more ornate front surround, and definitely changes the feel of the bed. The sides and back of the bed are made up from a series of wood panels. Each of these panels is divided into 5 sections.
The top section is a simple raised panel. Next is an open section with some intricate woodwork and carvings framing the opening. The middle section has relief carvings of various characters with a raised beaded frame. Below are 2 raised panel sections, one large with the bottom one smaller.
The panels are mostly finished in a warm brown tone. A black accent edge frames in all the raised panels. The relief carved panels have a black background with gold accents on the figures and the raised bead. The top section is open framework that comes assembled. There is a top rail that goes around all 4 sides and 2 other framing sections that divide the top into 4 sections.
The ceiling is open except for the framework. This bed as shown in the photos has been mostly assembled without fasteners other than some small removable wood tenons that go into mortises to hold the corners together. This Chinese bed is functional as well as decorative. It can be used as a sleeping bed or in a more formal room for seating. This bed is delivered disassembled, but 2 people should be able to put it together in about an hour.
