Here we have an extraordinary Song Dynasty 960 to 1279 AD Jian Ware tea bowl with Hare's Fur pattern. These rare tea bowls have remained famous throughout the centuries for 1000 years steeped in legend and mystique. Every tea bowl is unique- no two are alike.

In Japan many of these tea bowls have survived the last millennium handed down own generation to the next as prized possessions of the monks, the bowls each carrying a name. The extraordinary patterns here the result of the random effect of phase separation of the glaze during early cooling in the kiln.

On close examination in light the entire glaze has a golden shimmer which was almost impossible to photograph. It's like minute pin pricks of gold catch the light and shimmer.

This effect visible inside and outside on the glaze. The glaze has a thin film iridescence in blue that can be seen when examined under light. The camera did a little better at picking this blue iridescence out and I have shown this in several of the listing photos.

This special ancient tea bowl measures 6 5/16" in diameter by 2 7/16" tall approximately (160mm x 62mm). You will notice that the height of this ancient hand made tea bowl does vary every so slightly around the circumference, this is very subtle and is noticeable on close inspection viewed from the side. On close examination and captured in the photographs there is some crazing to the glaze. The foot feels smooth in the hand, there is a tiny section of the rim which feels just a little rough as you run your fingers across it - this is visually imperceptible and might be miniscule surface chips or abrasion in that area commensurate with 1000 years of use. This amazing tea bowl is a rare example of the legendary Jianyao Song dynasty wares. The photos form part of the description.
