Cloisonne is one of the most rarefied of ALL decorative arts collectibles, and probably the single most spectacular of the glass arts , when rendered in its highest form. Emerging from Ancient Egypt with tell-tale traces in the West throughout the classical & later periods (with fine French examples surging to the fore during the Enlightenment period & beyond), it was ancient China's innovations that saw the great elaborate beauty of melted (fired to vitreous) colored glass powders (enamel) draped & bathed over all manner of practical objects thus elevated to sparkling, colorful, works of art we now call "cloisonne" (from the French) - originally for use in the Imperial Court or only the very noblest of families these mostly as bronze, brass, and copper forms - vases, ewers, candle holders, ritual implements, etc. With applied wires segmenting the designs by color into elaborate patterns; as seen here in one of its largest & grandest possible forms: a masterpiece Chinese table set, polychrome rainbow-embelished on every surface.
Adopted from the Chinese in the late 1800's by the Japanese into increasingly innovative designs (led by Namikawa Yasuyuki) & transformed by a host of Japanese masters Namikawa Sosuke, Hayashi Kodenji, Kumeno Teitaro, etc. From the 1910's-1920's Golden Age of Cloisonne into thoroughly free-form, impressionistic masterpieces of flowing glass as if it were paint, these inimitably Japanese triumphs were still largely confined to vase, plaque, box, and other small-scale traditional forms. If you're the cloisonne collector who already has "cloisonne everything", this is the one thing you're missing! Almost certainly the nicest one local to the USA you'll find!
There is a chance they are Qianlong period, but I place that as remote, based upon the wirework. The condition is stated in the condition report, above, but again, is excellent for a FUNCTIONAL PIECE OF MONUMENTAL CLOISONNE YOU CAN STILL ACTUALLY USE FOR DINING OR TEA/COFFEE PURPOSES SOME 100 YEARS LATER! The stools are in exceptionally fine condition for this age and use-type, with virtually no apparent loss to the glass enameling (this set was almost certainly used indoors in a palatial or ceremonial setting). The table top is beautiful and also in good condition , but shows evidence of fracturing up-close, as expected from a glass enamel table-top over flexible copper actually used for the past CENTURY or so. I would be concerned if it DIDN'T show these immistakeable and (to my experience) unfakeable signs of age, along with the standard practice of Chinese waxing to preserve them (especially along the copper jointlines).
Despite some warping, it is beautiful & 100% functional with NO NEED FOR REPAIR. Again, this is confined only to the 1 table base piece (of 6 total pieces: 4 chairs, 1 tabletop, 1 table base) , and any competent metallurgic restorer or copper welder (simple as a plumber) could copper-weld supports inside the hollow base to permanently restore rigidity to this joint-line, if you so-desired. After that, a good heavy waxing of the surface enamel (as the Chinese have done for centuries in similar situations) or a resin or enamel repair would prevent any further loss. While this may sound an elaborate repair, it is confined to only one part, while the entire table & chair set is not only functional, but used continuously for years in its present condition as a set, and - with routine shimming - having proved quite stable enough for entertaining & enjoyment ON A DAILY BASIS. SO, THIS IS A GORGEOUS'WORK OF ART' TABLE & CHAIRS IN FUNCTIONING CONDITION - READY TO USE!How you choose to restore or improve - or leave alone - this circa 100 year-old antique is left to your own preference.
