We are pleased to offer this 19. Qing [Ching] Dynasty, Chinese, silk, embroidered, 5-Claw Dragon Robe in blue, Circa 1860. Made for generations, Dragon robes (officially known as chi-fu, or court robes), were based upon nomadic riding coats of the Manchus with openings down the right side, an over flap, as well as slits on either the front and back (men) or along the sides (women) in order to aid in horseback riding. The robes were fastened with round, ball-style buttons and loops, and had flaring horseshoe cuffs to protect the riders hands from the elements. Characteristics of this gorgeous and truly exquisite robe include: bright blue, silk satin; nine, sinuous, 5-claw dragons rendered in breathtaking couched gold metallic thread with silk satin stitch accents; a multi-colored wave pattern in blue, red, purple and yellow-green hues rendered with lightly-spun silk thread (such a pattern indicates that this robe was worn by a person of stature, such as a high official); whimsical, blue/green/white-hued, cumulus clouds. Throughout accented with auspicious bats, swastikas and Chi medallions; numerous auspicious rebuses adorning the wave patterns including parasols, lotus blossoms, fish, unending knots, flaming pearls, scrolls, coral, Ju-i scepters, and coins; brocade-woven, silk trim; couched cold metallic thread and silk satin stitch embroidery; round, metal buttons; and a blue, silk lining. This handsome robe is in very good condition and is a must-have for the serious and novice collector alike. It would make a striking statement as a decorators piece or focal point within any locale! Please note, has had the sleeve extenders replaced through the restoration process.

Additionally, it shows signs of wear commensurate with age including minor silk break down (lining), a few loose metallic threads, minor loose stitching i. Lining seam, collar trim, and light soiling.
