FREE PICK-UP IN THE CHICAGOLAND AREA. Up for your consideration is a beautiful and large Cizhou earthenware storage jug, measuring 21" tall and about 13" wide. Most pieces that I have found with sepia decorations over white with these designs date to the 11th or 12th Century. The term'Cizhou ware' refers to a type of sturdy stoneware produced at many kilns throughout the northern Chinese provinces of Hebei, Henan and Shaanxi.

Cizhou wares are heavily potted and boldly decorated with freely drawn designs. They are called'popular' ceramics (as opposed to the types produced for the imperial court).

The piece is in excellent condition for its age. There are two rim chips, one large and one medium sized. They are clearly pictured in the photos. Also, there is a very tight 7.5 crack that occurred when the piece was originally potted as you can see that it was piched back together before it was kiln dried (see last 3 photos). The base is in excellent condition, free of chips, and there are no restoration. Considering the size, this is about as nice as you will see, and it is comparable to those in museums.
