A very attractive and interesting Chinese painting on glass. It features two characters in bright dress carrying lanterns to a moonlit pool or lake.
The rest of the scene is monochromatic adding contrast and making the characters really stand out. The scene is likely from a traditional poem or story. The frame is a simple black lacquer with gilt. The painting is done to the reverse and there is another plate of glass as a backing for protection, this allowing the scene to be backlit if required.
Personally I think it looks best without back lighting as this reveals the brush strokes and makes it look more sketchy but it's an interesting effect. The taping around the edges is clearly recent and no doubt done to replace old failing tape. Date wise it is most likely late 19th or early 20th century.Frame re taped to the reverse. Some minor flaws, possibly in the glass, and some light scratches.
Reverse now protected by another sheet of glass. If for any reason you are unhappy with your item please let us know as soon as possible, and we will do our best to put things right.
