Antique Chinese Tiara Style Kingfisher Headdress

  
We are very proud to offer an antique lovely Chinese Tiara style Headdress that measures 7 inches high x 8 inches wide. It is probably a theatrical headdress that is covered in vibrant blue Kingfisher feathers that are largely intact. There are red, purple, and green pompoms that are old and dirty. The design has two dragons on top on either side. There are many glass pearls on springs. The headdress is made from cardboard upon which feathers and designs are mounted. This headdress is very old and fragile.

Everyone in its life has been careful with it because it is in good condition for its age. It is held together by tiny wires. Here is a nice example of a long lost Art.

For over 2,000 years the wealthy and often Royal Chinese have used Kingfisher bird feathers as an inlay for decorating fine objects and adornment. The process is called tian-tsui (dotting with Kingfishers). Kingfisher feathers are painstakingly cut and glued onto metal (gold or silver), wood, or paper-mache, etc. The effect is like cloisonné, but nothing rivals the electric blue color of the feathers. Blue is traditionally the favorite color in China. This type of Art was not well known outside of China. The intense color is not from pigments but from the way light is bent and reflected back. Our headdress has losses (see Photos), but the many Kingfisher feathers left are a surprisingly bright blue. Please examine the photos closely. They are an important part of the description.
