CHINESE EXPORT SILVER BOX VINEGARETTE c1820 CUMSHING, CANTON. A very fine and rare, c1820 Chinese export silver vinegarette. The only example of this form we own. It has has been in our collection since the late 1970s.

Vinegarettes are small, decorative travel boxes, which offer an alternative to. The perfume or aromatic vinegar is soaked in a small sponge, placed inside the box. Rectangular form cover with scene of Chinese traveling elder, woken from a dream by attendant. The dream represented above as Chinese figure "cloud walking". Opposite side mother and child in garden watch as men seated at games table. Interior retains the original pierced dragon in clouds, hinged cover. Retains much original detail, including some facial detail.
